ESAYPMillennials in the workforce: lazy and entitled or unfair stereotype?
Event Type: ESA Event
Date: Tuesday Jul 16, 2019, 5:30 pm
To conclude the Australian Conference of Economists (ACE), the annual Young Economists’ Debate returns in 2019 with an all-star line-up of opinions, egos and, of-course, economic thought. This year, we delve into the deep-seated generational issue of work ethic. Millennials have been dubbed ‘lazy and entitled’ in the workforce. Are millennials the downfall of modern productivity growth? Do they work hard enough to demand both eating smashed avo and owning their own property? Do they demand too many work benefits and system perks? Or, are they really no different from the ‘self-absorbed and spoilt’ baby boomers of the ‘Me Decade’?
Join the Economic Society of Australia—Young Professionals for a night of contentious arguments and entertaining economic debate. Individuals of all ages are encouraged to attend. Drinks and snacks provided.

Enjoy a drink while our panellists tackle the big questions: What are the economic forecasts (and how does Treasury produce them)? Will the budget finally get to surplus and does it matter? How big are the pre-election giveaways? And what will be the impact of the budget on young people and women?
We look forward to seeing you for a fascinating discussion.

Professional Development Seminar on Gender Lensing with Miranda Stewart and Janine Dixon
Event Type: ESA Event
Date: Thursday Mar 28, 2019, 12:30 pm
March's Professional Development seminar will be on Gender Lensing and presented by Professor Miranda Stewart and Associate Professor Janine Dixon. Following the success of WEN's Gender Lensing Masterclass at the recent Australian Gender Economics Workshop, this seminar will provide a "sampler" of what this type of analysis is about.
The objective of this seminar is to provide a brief demonstration of an applied analysis of how budgetary and other economic policy settings can be gender-patterned in their impacts and incentive effects. It aims to whet the appetite for more extensive learning about the Gender Lensing approach which would equip professional economists with the skills and insights to undertake a gender-sensitive evaluation of policy settings.

Policy in the Pub: Economic Regulation of Airports
Event Type: ESA Event
Date: Wednesday Mar 20, 2019, 5:30 pm
Airport regulation is a contested policy area, with airlines calling for changes to increase their bargaining power in negotiations with airports. The Productivity Commission’s draft report on the economic regulation of airports found that Australian airports are investing and operating efficiently by world standards, and existing airport regulation benefits the community. However, reforms are needed to enable greater scrutiny of airport performance in specific areas of concern. This talk will explain the Commission’s draft findings and recommendations, including why it thinks you’re not paying too much to park at the airport!
