DESCRIPTION:The Internet and Political Mobilisation
How does the internet influence civil protests around the world? Using a dataset on protests from over 18\,907 areas in 236 countries\, Associate Professor Paul Laschky has found that the internet has increased the occurrence of local protests. The effect of the internet on local protests is stronger in less democratic countries and areas with higher local internet penetration.
To test how technologies can be used to generate real-world impact\, Paul launched a platform which can remotely observe\, in real time\, the availability and quality of the internet at any location on the globe.&nbsp\; Pail will briefly talk about a commercial spin-off that resulted from his research and evidence from Hurricane Irma in 2017 and the Russian presidential elections in 2018.
About the speaker
Paul is an Associate Professor of Economics at Monash University. He completed his doctoral studies in 2008 at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and joined the department in 2009 after a research visit at the Wharton School\, University of Pennsylvania. His research interests cover political economy\, environmental economics\, insurance economics and development economics. Paul has published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics\, Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists\, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management\, and Journal of Public Economic\, inter alia.
His work has been featured by media outlets such as The Economist\, The Washington Post\, The Guardian\, and The Financial times. Paul has provided background papers for the World Bank\, the Asian Development Bank\, as well as the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia .
