Housing affordability: causes\, consequences and solutions This month&rsquo\;s talk is from Brendan Coates who will discuss housing affordability: the causes of rising house prices and rents\, their consequences and the policy options for improving affordability.
Synopsis&nbsp\;Within living memory\, Australia was a place where housing costs were manageable\, and people of all ages and incomes had a reasonable chance to own a home close to jobs. But over 20 years\, Australia house prices have more than doubled in real terms. And now\, home ownership rates are falling among the young and the poor and many Australians are spending more on housing than they should have to.
This talk will discuss: (i) the causes of rising housing prices and rents\, including the relative contributions of demand and supply side drivers\; (ii) the policy implications of worsening affordability\; and (iii) the policy actions that would really make a difference.
