DESCRIPTION:Synopsis
Aither recently released its 2015-16 water markets report for the southern Murray Darling Basin (MDB). This report highlighted dramatic increases in the price of water entitlements and allocations over the last 3 years. Chris Olszak (Director\, Aither) will present an assessment of recent water market trends and the underlying supply and demand side drivers of water markets. Drawing on Aither&rsquo\;s water market insights\, modelling and recent analysis\, this will include our assessment of the market impacts of the Commonwealth&rsquo\;s water entitlement buyback as well as analysis of the allocation price impacts of new irrigation development in the southern MDB (particularly nuts and cotton). The presentation will highlight the benefits of water markets in dealing with change and Chris will argue that water markets represent a success story in market development and management of scarce natural resources\, while acknowledging the need for ongoing improvements.&nbsp\;
 About the speaker 
Chris Olszak is a Director of Aither &ndash\; a leading Australian team of economists and policy advisers. Chris is an economist with 15 years consulting experience in public policy\, economic appraisal and market analysis. He combines these skills with in-depth technical and regulatory knowledge of water management in Australia. Over the last decade\, Chris has been heavily involved in the analysis of water market performance in the southern Murray Darling Basin authoring a number of flagship reports released by the National Water Commission. Since co-founding Aither in 2012\, his close involvement in the water sector has continued through Aither&rsquo\;s work for governments\, water businesses\, regulators\, agribusiness\, and other private clients. Chris leads Aither&rsquo\;s quantitative analysis of water markets and rural water policy &ndash\; including the development of Aither&rsquo\;s bespoke water market models and independent Water Markets Report.
