DESCRIPTION:Does competition work in health care?
A significant proportion of health spending has no impact on health. Market failure seems to dominate\, leading to significant government involvement and regulation of health care markets. This talk will summarise the issues and evidence on the effect of competition in health care markets. Pro-competitive reforms can improve efficiency in some contexts\, but careful regulation is also necessary to ensure desirable outcomes.
Biography
Tony leads the Health Economics Research Program at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne\, and jointly co-ordinates the University of Melbourne Health Economics Group.&nbsp\; He has a PhD in Economics from the University of Aberdeen. Tony is an National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Principal Research Fellow. He is an Associate Editor of Journal of Health Economics and Health Economics.
