DESCRIPTION:The Economic Society of Australia (Vic Branch) is pleased to host Professor Mary Morgan from the London School of Economics for a public lecture exploring "The Importance of Measurement in Re-Shaping Economies".
Overview of lecture: At those moments when states aim to re-make their economies into some other form (following transitions\, revolutions\, wars\, etc) economic measurement plays a surprisingly crucial role in the recipes chosen to transform economies. This agenda prompts reflections on a) the relationship between accounting principles and empirical knowledge of causes\; b) importance of field guides that do the translations from ideal types of measurement to those made on the ground economy\; and c) the relationship between top down expertise and bottom up preferences for the possibility of trust and success.
About the speaker: Prior to joining the London School of Economics\, Mary was a Professor of the History of Economics and the Philosophy of Economic Science at the University of Amsterdam. She has published a number of papers on economic modelling and measurement and the links to policy. Mary was elected Fellow of the British Academy in&nbsp\;July 2002 and elected as an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences in May 2002.
