DESCRIPTION:The Topic: Entrenched disadvantage in Australia
Australia has experienced more than two decades of uninterrupted economic growth. While there are some challenges ahead\, it goes without saying that we are one of the richest nations in the world. However\, this has not necessarily translated well to moving people out of disadvantage. This presentation will examine the segments of the population for whom life in Australia is not as prosperous as we would expect. In particular\, it will discuss the dynamics and drivers of disadvantage in Australia\, the persistence and entrenchment of disadvantage and the characteristics of those at risk of chronic disadvantage. Understanding the complexity of disadvantage in Australia is a crucial step towards informing better policies that would ultimately improve the lives of many Australians and lead to a more prosperous nation.

 

The speaker:

Sarah-Jane Derby is a Senior Economist at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) where she undertakes research on the economic and social policy issues affecting Australia. Her research experience has spanned a range of areas including industry\, social and regional economic development policy.
