The memoirs of a multi-faceted economist

Join us for an enlightening evening as the Economics Society of Australia Victorian Branch presents a distinguished talk by Rodney Maddock - a seasoned economist whose career spans the academic, governmental, and private sectors. With decades of hands-on experience, Rodney will share invaluable insights into the world of economics, highlighting not only the challenges but also the tremendous opportunities that arise when theory meets practice.

During this talk, Rodney will delve into his multifaceted journey, offering practical wisdom for aspiring economists and those curious about the diverse pathways in the field. Whether you are a student eager to explore career possibilities, a young professional striving to make your mark, or simply someone with a keen interest in the evolving role of economics in shaping policy and business strategy, this session promises to provide fresh perspectives and thought-provoking discussions.

About the Speaker

Rodney Maddock is a distinguished economist whose career spans academia, government, and the corporate world, uniquely positioning him as a bridge between theory and practice. Beginning with first-class honours in econometrics from Queensland and a PhD in Macroeconomics from Duke University, Rodney's early career at the Australian National University set the stage for his deep intellectual and practical pursuits.

His international academic experience includes teaching economics in Spanish at Colombia’s Universidad de Antioquia and later serving as a Professor at La Trobe University. Transitioning seamlessly into public policy, Rodney played a pivotal role in shaping economic policy in Victoria during a period of significant governmental change. His expertise was further honed in the corporate realm; as Chief Economist at the Business Council of Australia and through key leadership roles at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, he navigated strategic challenges during the Global Financial Crisis.

In his recent roles, Rodney has continued to influence economic thought and policy as Director at CEDA, Head of the Australian Centre for Financial Studies at Monash University, and as the Lead at the West of Melbourne Research Centre at Victoria University. His work reflects a rare synthesis of econometric rigor, macroeconomic insight, historical perspective, and practical policy and strategic planning. Rodney’s diverse experiences underscore his commitment to not only understanding but also actively shaping economic and regional development in Australia and beyond.

Rodney’s career is a testament to the value of cross-sector experience, having consulted across industries during crucial microeconomic reforms, led strategic initiatives in challenging financial climates, and continuously pushed the boundaries of academic economic research for practical, real-world impact.
