Generative AI, AI Risks and the Changing Nature of Work in Australia

Dr. Emmanuelle Walkowiak will present a novel perspective on how generative AI and AI risk exposure drive job transformation. Previous technology adoption measures have overlooked this, distorting our understanding of AI's impact on jobs. Dr. Walkowiak's empirical research reveals how Australian workers face risks like privacy breaches, cybersecurity threats, professional standards violations, algorithmic bias, misinformation risks, accountability issues, and intellectual property concerns within the Australian workforce. She will also highlight job transformation in 126 cultural and creative occupations, detailing the intensity, timing, and nature of these new AI risks to guide effective risk mitigation and upskilling strategies.

About The Speaker

Dr Walkowiak has two decades of experience as an economist studying how the rapid adoption of technologies drives the transformation of work and organizations. She is a Vice-Chancellor's Senior Research Fellow at RMIT and a research affiliate of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S). Emmanuelle’s international experience is extensive, having worked in the US, the UK, and France where she led and coordinated $6.7 million research projects and grants on computerisation, reorganisation of workplaces, IT adoption and the changing nature of work in a knowledge society. She was the recipient of the Robert Solow award after her PhD and carried out post-doctoral research at Princeton University. Her current research analyses the impact of the digital transformation on the future of work and inclusion.
In September 2023, she launched and now leads the FLOW-GenAI initiative focused on the Future of Labour Organisation and Work with GenAI at RMIT. Her research interests encompass the intersection between neurodiversity and digital transformation, the impact of technologies on inclusion and the quality of working life of workers.
