AI and Industry
Actionable AI by Building Trustworthiness
Professor Holden has been working closely with the minerals industry over the past 17 years to develop innovative AI solutions to support the interpretation of the subsurface. In her research, diverse types of geodata are used, and AI solutions are developed to improve efficiency by alleviating bottlenecks in industry’s workflow, and as well as providing consistency in data interpretation outcomes. Her research applies machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing, combined with human-in-the-loop design and interactive visualisation, to ensure geological information and knowledge are extracted in a trustworthy manner for geoscientists. In this seminar, she will share her experiences in making AI applications actionable and deployable for industry decision-making, using her own case-studies on ore body knowledge understanding, subsurface mapping, and geological report analysis. She will also discuss some of the challenges of AI adoption that the industry broadly faces.
Louise McGrath will speak about AI and industry. Further details will be available closer to the date.
About The Speakers
Professor Eun-Jung Holden has leading expertise in developing innovative and trustworthy AI applications for the mining industry. She was trained as a computer scientist and has become a multi-disciplinary researcher who bridges the fields of computer science and geoscience, and connects academia with industry. Some of her research outcomes have been translated and disseminated as commercial, proprietary or public-domain software tools, achieving a global impact in the resource industry. Her recent collaboration with industry, applying machine learning to understand geological information and materials in the subsurface has resulted in three industry-driven patents. Between 2021-2023, Professor Holden served as the Founding Director of UWA Data Institute. In 2024, she joined the University of Melbourne, as a Professor in Digital Innovation. She was a winner of the Women in Technology in WA (WiTWA) Tech [+] 20 Awards in 2019; and the winner of the AI in Mining category of Women in AI Awards Australia and New Zealand, 2022.
Louise McGrath has a broad range of experience in international policy. She has particular interest in trade and border regulations, international transport, cross cultural communication, and digital trade policy.
In her role as the Australian Industry Group’s Head of Industry Development and Policy she provides strategic leadership and guidance for Ai Group’s policy agenda in building competitive industries through global integration, infrastructure development and innovation. She ensures that through policy leadership members have a voice at all levels of government, by representing and promoting their interests on current and emerging issues.
Louise represents Australian Industry in several multilateral forums, such as the B20 Taskforces, Global Business Coalition, and the East Asia Business Council working group on RCEP. She advocates for the interests of Ai Group members during Free Trade Negotiations and translates those agreements to support the strategic aims of members.
She is a member of CSIRO’s Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence at Scale Think Tank and the Manufacturing Advisory Group, the board of the Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence and the National Reference Group of The Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies (ACICIS). She also represents Ai Group on the International Trade Remedies Forum and the Modern Slavery Expert Advisory Group.
