Prosper Australia invites you to join us for a night of intellectual discourse and celebration as we honour the legacy of 19th-century economist and social reformer, Henry George.

The 2024 Henry George commemorative address will be delivered by Sock-Yong Phang, a visiting Singaporean economist and expert in housing finance, boom-bust cycles, value capture, and Singapore’s unique housing system and public development agencies.

The evening will also feature the presentation of the E.J. Craigie Award for the best article or essay contributing to contemporary Georgist thinking over the past year.

About the Speaker

Sock-Yong Phang is the Celia Moh Chair Professor of Economics at the Singapore Management University. A scholar of urban economics, she obtained her PhD degree in economics from Harvard University in 1989 and has since published widely in the areas of housing and transportation economics.

She is the author of the books Policy Innovations for Affordable Housing in Singapore (2018), Housing Finance Systems: Market Failures and Government Failures (2013) and Housing Markets and Urban Transportation (1992) and has written several book chapters and journal articles on housing and transport economics and regulation.

She has been a consultant to the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and various government organizations, and has served as a board member for Singapore's Urban Redevelopment Authority, Land Transport Authority, Public Transport Council, Energy Market Authority, Competition Commission, and the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.
