A deep dive into Australia's property market
Hosted by the Productivity Commission
The last five years have resulted in a new property market dynamic, the traditionally tighter markets have slowed down, and markets that were typically avoided by investors are taking the cake and eating it too. These new dynamics have meant varying consequences for all property investors, government stakeholders, and even forecasting enthusiasts.
In a market that holds over $10 trillion, being able to forecast what it will do is particularly important, not just with respect to investment but also planning and revenue.
Dr Sarwar will be using the presentation to discuss various aspects of the Australian property market including reliably forecasting prices (using a BSTS model benchmarked against RNNs and ARIMA models), how homebuilder affected pricing and allocation (and whether first home buyer grants and policies have the power to distort the market), and the first home buyer journey.
About The Speaker
Dr Aneeq Sarwar is Domain’s resident economist where he leads Domain’s forecasting and technical division. Dr Sarwar has a PhD in Innovation, Productivity, and Big Data, has published with various national and international bodies, and reviews books for the Economic Record. He has worked in various capacities as an innovation economist in academia, as a labour market economist at Ai Group, and currently as a property market economist at Domain. Dr Sarwar’s PhD was focused at examining the spatial clustering of intangible resources using machine learning to identify knowledge spillovers. In another life, he had a career in public speaking and led a not-for-profit training teachers, developing, and implementing curriculum for schools with at-risk students.
