Getting Your Students Interested in Economics

In this presentation, Michelle will reflect upon the critical shortage of students undertaking economics in secondary schools including schools outside of metropolitan Melbourne. She will discuss how this may affect the future supply of economists in Australia and will draw upon the work undertaken by La Trobe University in conjunction with the Victorian Commercial Teachers Association as well as the recent reports into economics education issued by the RBA education team.

Michelle will also provide data of current enrolment in VCE Economics and suggest reasons why students and teachers are shying away from this area of the curriculum.

During the presentation, Michelle will pose the question for discussion:

How might we better support students and teachers including those from disadvantaged or low SES areas to discover a passion for economics when they are denied the chance to be exposed to economic literacy through current circumstances?
