The Economic Society of Australia - Victoria Branch cordially invites you to our 



The Economic Society is looking forward to getting together in person, and promoting connection among our members and those interested in contemporary economic issues and debate. 

Please join us as we hear from our guest speaker, Greg Jericho. 

Greg Jericho has had the unique career of going from blogger criticizing the media to himself a prominent member of the media and then onto the role of policy director and Chief Economist at The Australia Institute. His address will cover the changing nature of economics reporting over the past 15 years, and how he played a role bringing graphs into common usage among economic journalists. He will also discuss how The Australia Institute uses its research to drive policy debates on issue such as the Stage 3 tax cuts, climate policy and industrial relations.

About The Speaker

Greg Jericho is the Chief Economist at the Australia Institute and policy director at the Centre for Future Work. Greg also writes a weekly column on economics and politics for Guardian Australia – a position he has held since 2013. In 2016 he won the Walkley Award for Commentary, Analysis, Opinion & Critique, and in 2018 he was a Walkley Award finalist with Gareth Hutchens for their report on the crisis of wages in Australia in the Best Industrial Reporting category. He has also written for ABC, SBS and Meanjin with a focus on policy and journalism coverage of Australian politics. Prior to working at the Australia Institute, Greg lectured in journalism and political communication at the University of Canberra and from 2006 to 2011 he worked in the Australian Public Service predominantly in the arts and film portfolios.

6.00pm – 6.30pm members and guests arrive, complementary hot and cold food available

6.30pm – 7.15pm guest speaker and Q&A

7.15pm – 7.30pm AGM

7.30pm – formalities close, but guests are welcome to continue socialising

Finger food will be provided.
