Two modern masters of economic thought

Come and listen to research wisdom from two of our brightest economic minds in Melbourne who were both recently appointed as Distinguished Fellows of the Society.
Emeritus professor Ian McDonald will speak on his lifetime interest in macroeconomics, wage rigidity and behavioural economics. Professor Lisa Cameron who holds the James Riady chair in Asian Economics and Business and is also a professorial fellow at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economics and Social Research. Lisa is an empirical microeconomists also dabbling in behavioral and experimental economics to gauge and understand human behaviour and the implications for public policy.
About the Speakers
Professor Lisa Cameron joined the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne as a professorial research fellow in July 2017. She was appointed the James Riady Chair in Asian Economics and Business in 2022. She is an empirical micro-economist whose research incorporates the techniques of experimental and behavioural economics so as to better understand human decision-making. Much of her research focuses on policy evaluation - understanding the impacts and behavioural implications of public policy, with a focus on social and economic issues. She is particularly interested in the welfare of disadvantaged and marginalised groups and the socio-economic determinants of health. Much of her research to date has focused on developing countries, particularly Indonesia and China and she has extensive experience collaborating with agencies such as the World Bank and AusAID (DFAT). Lisa received her PhD from Princeton University in 1996. In 2013 she was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences.
Professor Ian McDonald graduated with a PhD from Simon Fraser University in 1974. His fields of study are Behavioural Economics and Macroeconomics. Ian was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1981, Reader in 1986 and Professor in 1990. He has held visiting positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Monash University, Nanyang University, Oxford University and Queen’s University. Ian has held a number of administrative positions including Head of the Department of Economics, University of Melbourne 1993 to 1996, Chair of the Teaching and Learning Quality Assurance Committee, University of Melbourne, 1999 to 2000 and Deputy Dean, Faculty of Economics and Commerce, University of Melbourne, 1999-2002 and 2005. Ian is an Editor of the Australian Economic Review and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, Australia.
