The Victorian Government will deliver its 2021-22 Budget on 20 May 2021. What have been the implications of the pandemic on the Victorian economy and government finances? And what is the focus of the Government’s expenditure plans for economy recovery and policy priorities?

We welcome Chris Barrett, Deputy Secretary of Economic Division at the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance to present an overview of the Budget, followed by a question and answer session.

Chris Barrett is Deputy Secretary of Economic Division in the Department of Treasury and Finance which is responsible for economic policy, revenue and service delivery. In his most recent role as Invest Victoria CEO, he led both the Victorian Government’s approach to investment attraction and the Economic Recovery Mission in response to COVID-19. Chris’ career includes nearly two decades in public service in both Canberra and Melbourne, including as Deputy Secretary, Policy and Cabinet in the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet.

In 2011, he was appointed Australian Ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, where he led Australia’s engagement with the OECD and contributed to global best-practice public policy. Following on from his role with the OECD, Chris spent four years with the European Climate Foundation in Berlin, where, as Executive Director, Finance and Economics, he led an international philanthropic strategy on the economic and financial implications and opportunities of the low-carbon transition.

He started his career as a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group’s Melbourne office. He has degrees in economics and politics from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Public Policy from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.
