Synopsis
Aither recently released its 2015-16 water markets report for the southern Murray Darling Basin (MDB). This report highlighted dramatic increases in the price of water entitlements and allocations over the last 3 years. Chris Olszak (Director, Aither) will present an assessment of recent water market trends and the underlying supply and demand side drivers of water markets. Drawing on Aither’s water market insights, modelling and recent analysis, this will include our assessment of the market impacts of the Commonwealth’s water entitlement buyback as well as analysis of the allocation price impacts of new irrigation development in the southern MDB (particularly nuts and cotton). The presentation will highlight the benefits of water markets in dealing with change and Chris will argue that water markets represent a success story in market development and management of scarce natural resources, while acknowledging the need for ongoing improvements.
