Which evaluation approach when?: Helping make informed choices

There are a variety of evaluation approaches available for estimating the cost and value of interventions including those that involve broader social costs and benefits, such as cost-benefit analysis (CBA).  However there are a number of other approaches including break-even analysis, multi-criteria analysis, private rates of return, social rates of return, cost-effectiveness analysis, and cost-utility analysis.  The selection of the right evaluation approach is important when considering evidence-based decision making and choosing between interventions.  Knowing when and where to use which approach is critical to this choice process.
