Commonwealth Budget Review 2018/19

The Economic Society of Australia’s Victorian branch is pleased to welcome Peter Martin, Danielle Wood and Lisa Gropp to provide their perspectives on the Federal Budget. Each will speak for 10 minutes after which the floor will be opened for a Q&A session moderated by Brendan Coates.

This is a members-only event. Friends are encouraged to take up membership so they too can attend this event.

About our Speakers

Peter Martin is the economics editor of The Age. A former Commonwealth Treasury official, Peter has reported economics for the ABC and then Fairfax Media since 1985. With Dr Gigi Foster he presents The Economists on ABC RN, and presents Wednesday Economics on ABC Nightlife.

Danielle Wood is the Budget Policy and Institutional Reform Program Director at the Grattan Institute. Danielle has extensive experience in advising on economic policy issues. Her research and advocacy efforts focus on tax and budget policy, intergenerational inequality and competition policy.

Lisa Gropp is the Chief Economist at the Business Council of Australia. Lisa came to the Business Council from the Productivity Commission, where she most recently served as First Assistant Commissioner and Principal Adviser Research. She joined the Productivity Commission in 1998, taking a lead role in a number of Productivity Commission inquiries, including into carbon policy emissions in key economies (2011), executive remuneration in Australia (2009), road and rail freight infrastructure pricing (2006) and the impacts of medical technology (2005).

About our host

Brendan Coates is the Australian Perspectives Fellow at the Grattan Institute. Brendan’s research focuses on tax reform, economic and budget policy, retirement incomes and superannuation, housing, transport infrastructure and cities.
