Gender gaps among academic economists: Seminar by Professor Karen Mumford

WEN (Victoria) is very pleased to welcome Professor Karen Mumford, who is visiting Australia from the University of York. In this seminar, Karen will look at what’s changed for women economists in academia and discuss the challenges they still encounter. She will share her recent analysis of the gender pay gap amongst academic economists in the UK and how it has (not) changed this century.

About the speaker

Karen is an Australian labour economist who has spent most of her career working in the UK. She has a long history of investigating the relative position of men and women amongst academic economists. This includes starting the Royal Economic Society annual survey of academic economists in 1996, and undertaking the first gender survey of Australian economics departments in 2000. Karen’s other research interests also include the relative position of women in the labour market in general, family economics, wage bargaining, and measuring job satisfaction.

Karen formerly held the role of Chair of the UK’s Royal Economic Society’s Women's Committee from 2009 to 2016, and was a founding member of the Women’s Committee in 1996.
